Store-bought hair and skin products not working for you? You might want to try making a homemade remedy. Trust me, I’ve tried literally every single hair or skin product out there because nothing works, it’s especially hard when I’m allergic to EVERYTHING. If you’re at all like me, or you just need to give your bikini bod a break from the hundreds of artificial ingredients (that no one can pronounce) on the bottle, then here’s a tip…. put down your car keys and head to your fridge or pantry. Odds are you probably have all the ingredients right in your own home…. inst THAT convenient

Recipes for Luscious Locks:

For damaged hair: Eggs have tons of protein and are good for strengthening hair. As a bonus, eggs will also soften and condition those lovely locks. For a quick remedy, simply whip 2 eggs in a small bowl until smooth and add 1 tsp. each of olive oil and lime juice. (If anyone asks…. say you’re making omelets LOL) Massage the mixture onto your scalp, leave it in for 25 minutes, then shampoo and rinse as normal.

To get shinier hair: One word: beer. The alcohol in beer is the secret ingredient to help clean and make your hair shine! To bring your hair back to life: Get a can/bottle of beer from the fridge and let it sit until it reaches room temperature (make sure the beer is flat). Shampoo and condition your hair as normal.  Rinse your hair with warm water and squeeze out excess water. Pour the beer bottle directly on your scalp and let it sink in for a couple of minutes. Rinse out the beer and style as usual. So next time you “babysit” a warm beer at a party.. no need to feel guilty!

Improve hair elasticity: Bananas are filled with a lot of potassium to keep hair healthy. Mash one banana in a bowl and work it through your hair starting from the scalp and working downward. Leave the banana in your hair for 15 minutes and then wash with shampoo and rinse.


Recipes for Healthy Skin:

For dry skin: Mayonnaise is made up of healthy oils and nourishing egg yolks. It’s perfect for getting smooth, soft skin! Combine 2 tbsp. of mayonnaise with 1 tsp. of baby oil and smooth onto rough skin areas. Leave this dynamic duo on for about 20 minutes and then rinse with warm water.

To reduce wrinkles: Grapes are the secret weapon here! Who would have thought they are great exfoliators and are rich in vitamins. To make a grape scrub, mix 1/2 cup grapes, 1 tsp. olive oil, 1/4 cup yogurt and 1 tbsp. baking soda in a blender until smooth. Gently rub the mask on your face and rinse with warm water.

For sun damaged skin: This will come in handy for all of those beach-lovers (me included!). Honey contains many antioxidants that help heal skin exposed to the sun. It’s also a great moisturizer. Lemon juice has natural glycolic and alpha hydroxy acids that amend uneven complexion and smooth your skin.  Apply a thin layer of dark honey to sunburnt skin and let it sit for about 20-30 minutes. Rinse with warm water and pat skin dry. Afterwards, mix a tbsp. of lemon juice and a cup of water and rub it on your skin with a cotton pad and let it sit until dry. You can either leave the lemon on or wait 30 minutes to an hour and wash it off with warm water. I hope these homemade concoctions do the trick for you! But don’t forget the most important part to keeping hair and skin looking healthy-always drink plenty of water and eat a diet rich in nutrients and vitamins.
